i do care

Created by Veronika Matkovska

This is a project about things that nowadays people might care about and what touches and worries them. I am doing this project in a form of a dictionary, where I compare the “official” meaning of a word and how the word is interpreted by the people it touches. The main idea is that I give a word to a person and this word is explained in a personal, more emotional and true way. This personal explanation can be done in a form of a short note, narrative or a poem. The essence of this project is to express the thoughts, anxieties, sentiments and simply tell what do each one of us cares about.

Authenticity

photo_2017-11-12_16-48-07_edited.jpg

the quality of being real or true

"Authenticity - something unique, original and initial. it's something current, new, but with motives of the old and the primordial. For instance, modern embroidery is authentic, modern cloth is used, latest trends of the shirt models, but vintage embroidery. In general, it can be said about things, clothes, toys. Authenticity is also a certain cultural heritage, and even partially forgotten or old."

Background

photo_2019-05-18_11-54-36.jpg

the part of a picture or scene that forms a setting for the main figures or objects, or appears furthest from the viewer.

"Background to me means noise and distractions, something that you are not aware of at all times but that is constantly there. The word 'background' makes me think of an underlying idea or emotion that you don't think about but which presence you can sense throughout your day and it impacts your perspective and point of view."

Community

photo_2018-10-09_11-56-59.jpg

people who are considered as a unit because of their common interests, social group, or nationality

"When I hear the word community, I immediately imagine people standing together. Different, while united by something common. These can be people who do work together, have common views on life, or simply spend time together (for example, a family dinner), or simply live side by side. In my view, these people look happy, because each of them cares for the other, which means it’s easier for them to cope with any troubles and achieve results."

Emotion

photo_2019-05-20_10-36-03.jpg

a mental state variously associated with thoughts, feelings, behavioural responses, and a degree of pleasure or displeasure.

"I am very intrigued by human emotions, their origins, their nature. They are amazing. In science, for example, it is often customary to equate them with just chemical reactions, molecules. But for me, this definition is too simple. This is, after all, a reflection of our psychological state, our "I". This is how our inner world reacts to the outside.
Feelings influence a lot, exactly how we see this world. This filter absorbs a certain part of the spectrum. Let me explain my thoughts, by filter I mean how we perceive information under the influence of emotions. Our mood affects our worldview.
What I consider rather difficult is to express my emotions correctly. How often do you lack words to describe your sense of self? Our language, and indeed any other, is not able to give us all the words to express all the feelings in detail. For example, today I feel very good, but at the same time I am so tired and I am a little upset about some events in my life. I can not just say: “I am happy”, or “I am sad”, there are too many nuances in emotions. It’s like looking at 100 different shades of the same color: each one is unique, but for some reason we all call them “blue”. It is this imperfection of the language, both Russian and French, and English that led me to creativity. Creativity is a new language without words, in which you don’t need to pick up phrases or follow expressions. This is the best way to communicate with this world, to express your feelings without further explanation. I think it would be more boring to live without emotions. They make us alive."

Feminism

photo_2018-12-08_13-21-18.jpg

a range of political movements, ideologies, and social movements that share a common goal: to define and achieve political, economic, personal, and social gender equality.

"Feminism for me is a healthy egoism that I practice in order to figure out what I really want and what I really need despite all the things I experience from my surrounding. Feminism for me is saying "I am achieving, I am getting it" when my aunt says that these phrases are supposed to come from a man. Feminism is to move fast and make big steps when the friend I am walking with says that this is not the stride a woman is supposed to have. For me personally, the point of this motion is "non conviction" - not judging the ways women live their life, not judging their activity or passivity,  not expecting them to take care of others, follow traditions, and do things that are commonly expected from females.Theories of feminism simply teach you to feel more comfortable in your own body and in your own mind, it sets you free from chains of social prejudices."

Kindness

photo_2018-02-05_09-00-41.jpg

The quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate

"Kindess - This is more about global goodness. For example, in the context of such a proposal, "The peoples of the north are inclined to show kindness to both their fellow tribesmen and guests, as the harsh conditions force them to rally." With the same success, this word can be used subjectively, with reference to one person or when it comes to an inanimate object, for example, a picture that radiates kindness."

Love

photo_2019-05-20_10-36-17.jpg

Love encompasses a range of strong and positive emotional and mental states, from the most sublime virtue or good habit, the deepest interpersonal affection and to the simplest pleasure.

"I can not fully explain how I understand love. Love can be different: in friendship, between two people, towards nature, towards parents, towards small things. The first thing that comes to mind at the moment is my boyfriend, and then everything else. I believe that to him I experienced my first true love for man. For me, love is trust, I trust this person so much that it is sometimes strange that I can even share it with someone, although for many people this is not necessarily in a relationship. Just like a return from another person, when you realize that whatever happens, he will tell me. For me, love is when you notice the smallest changes. How his eyelash fell, how he squeezed my hand differently.
In general, for me, love is to know that you fully understand and accept a person, and he you."

Mutual

photo_2019-05-20_10-42-27.jpg

feeling the same emotion, or doing the same thing to or for each other

"I reckon that “mutual” is about connections, feedback and relationships. There are lots of associations and this very word feels warm and soft like embraces. Additionally, it reminds me of some kind of group that has a common goal and morale or a healthy family. Anyway, it comes to human relationships. Any of them cannot exist without mutuality so that “mutual” describes relationships with a genuine friend, loving boyfriend or sensitive mother.

Also, it is about energy. The energy which envelopes every atom and is given and taken by every being mutually, reciprocally, in equal quantities. (The law of conservation of energy, yeah.) The whole world would be impossible without this simple word. Let it be “mutual”."

Originality

photo_2019-05-20_10-33-43.jpg

the quality of being special and interesting and not the same as anything or anyone else

"Originality - for me,for some reason, means both original and primordial. It may well be connected - a person realizes and cognizes himself only through his originality, coming to the roots
Many people often told me that I was unusual and original, that they saw something different in me, and maybe I even agree with them, but only in the context that something unusual and bright can be found in anything, even despite the grayness of the regular days. Even despite the huge amount of plagiarism in our time, I believe that originality still has a place: there are new music performers who let them take some things from previous generations, but they create something beautiful and new. Art will always remain original, but only on condition that the creator will be so - will not try to bend and will listen only to his own universe."

Pansexuality

photo_2019-05-12_13-59-38.jpg

"As for me, pansexuality is the same, as bisexuality. Just the first term highlights that you can be attracted to any gender and that it doesn’t have an influence on your attraction. Some people say that pansexuals are attracted to the inner world. In fact it could be anything, like appearance and style, they just don’t care about gender at the first place. For the Russian speaking community it says that you have more than a basic knowledge on the LGBTQ+ topic. Term “bisexual” in that community says that you’re attracted to the cis-people from same and opposite genders, when “pansexual” is often used to be more inclusive."

True

photo_2019-04-10_10-12-02.jpg

"Be brave enough to not lie to yourself. Figure out want you really want and ignore all the distraction that keeps you away from your goal.

Be  calm and happy when you are thinking about what are you doing with your life. When you are critical about what you are doing and you can objectively analyze what went wrong and what went well. Have enough courage to step away from people that you don't need but you are scared to be without them"

Values

photo_2019-05-13_22-59-15.jpg

the principles that help you to decide what is right and wrong, and how to act in various situations

"Probably one of the most vague words I've ever met. I'm not sure that people consciously use this concept, for me this is one of those things that just sits inside, as an indicator and you understand yours or not. Recently, most often I come across this word at work, as it has now become fashionable to talk about the values that the company adheres to. The concept of "our values" in fact should instill the soul in the organization, but in fact it rarely happens. Perhaps so far people have not learned from a vague concept to define something concrete or is it just a tribute to fashion that will soon pass. But I want to believe that there is not, since there is also a positive influence. When choosing a job, modern youth began to give preference not only to a well-known company or a salary, but also to ideas, a mission, and all that the company lays in its values, even for a time, even on paper. The feeling that your inner aspirations coincide with the organization where you work - helps to find harmony and feel in the right place at the right time. As for family and life in general, the question of value has not yet been fully revealed to me, it seems to me that this is what a person comes after years of trial and error and determines for himself over time that he will inform his loved ones and keep inside himself until the last breath so to speak)"

Yourself

photo_2019-05-20_10-38-30.jpg

used when the subject of the verb is "you" or the person being spoken to, and the object is the same person

"When it comes to me, being myself includes a lot of things: it means to project how I really feel and am. Sometimes my true self is happy: I am smiling and laughing around, which is obviously fine. On another day, I am focused on a goal, my serious self takes over and the only thing I can show to the world is how much I want to get the work done, which is fine too. But there are also days when being myself means to be by myself. On those days I choose to spend time with my own thoughts - sometimes positive ones, sometimes negative ones, which the modern society does not always understand. Being by myself does not mean to reject the society, it means to give yourself time to think about life goals, accomplishments and solutions to various problems. I like being myself, to make the world see how I truly am - happy, sad, or thoughtful - I am being myself. Sometimes, however, i have a hard time being myself because of the pressure made by the society. There are certain standards which you are “supposed” to follow. I do, however, believe that each person is different and judging them for who they are is not correct. Being yourself - a unique personality, and respecting others is the key of understanding and peace in the world."

Comfort zone

photo_2017-11-11_22-22-12.jpg

a situation in which you feel comfortable and in which your ability and determination are not being tested

"The comfort zone is something completely individual, a kind of cozy corner - a blanket from which you do not want to crawl out in the morning, or a warm fire in the middle of a dark forest. It's no secret that in order to achieve something beautiful you have to go out of your comfort zone, because the stars at night can be clearly seen only standing away from other sources of light. On the other hand, it is logical that outside the comfort zone a person will feel ill at ease, which means it is harmful for himself to stay there for a long time. True happiness is achieved with a balanced amount of time, which is determined by the outside world, and that which is attached to itself."
